Get Your Company Found – the Right Way

SEO, or search engine optimization, is one of the most important things you’ll do to get your company, product, service – your brand – known.   SEO affects the visibility of a website or web page in a search engine’s free, natural or organic (un-paid) search results.  All major search engines such as Google, Yahoo and Bing – and there are many others – have these results, and they show and rank results based on what each search engine considers most relevant to its users.

Whitehat SEO vs. Blackhat SEO

As in everything else, there is no shortage of snake oil salesmen in the SEO world.  These blackhat SEO companies promise unrealistically fast results and rely on their clients’ lack of knowledge to make their money.  Real, or whitehat SEO, is a process and can never provide instant results – certainly not a switch that can be instantly flipped on and off.

How do you know if a company is legitimate?  Here are a few reasons to run for the hills:

1. If they contact you for the first time via email. Legitimate SEO companies do not solicit their clients by sending emails which is just a higher type of spam.  They will not send you one of these emails we’ve all gotten that go something like this:

“Subject Line:  Website Design | SEO Services At Affordable Price

Hi, I hope you are doing well

We are a 5+ year’s professional company offering creative and innovative web design & development, SEO services and more. We have experienced team focused entirely on web services. We have the skills and expertise to help structure and mould your ideas into designs and functionalities.” Etc.  This was verbatim.

2. If they promise you quick results. Many website owners who understand how whitehat SEO works for them invest significant time and resources creating great content and optimizing it for search engines.  It can take months or years to build the authority required to bring a page to the top of the Search Engine Result Pages (SERP).  And it’s well worth the effort.
3. Paying for backlinks. “I will create 500 high quality backlinks for $5.”  Not only will they be automatically generated backlinks (the high quality is a lie), as Sucuri points out,  “Spam backlinks are usually placed in hidden iFrames where no one, including the site owner, can see them via a browser. SEO spam looks to abuse the audience you have worked so hard for and generate precious link juice for their respective clients.”

Whitehat SEO uses strategies such as keywords, manual backlinking, manual citation building and writing good, quality content for your website and other places across the web.  It also integrates social media – the social media that is right for your specific business. There are many types of media to get content out there (such as blogging).  In other words, it’s an entire strategy and not just a couple of quick fixes. White hat SEO is a long-term investment and should be an ongoing, put-it-in-your-monthly-budget-type investment.

SEO done the right way and done well will get you the traffic you need and will get you found, positioning you as the expert in your field.
